Retail Look-Herberger's Going Out Of Buisness-La Crosse, Wisconsin

During my trip to Iowa, we stop in La Crosse and stopped at the Valley View Mall. And one of those stores was Herberger's. Herberger's started at the mall in 1980 when the mall opened as one of the 4 Anchors. There were originally in a very small 40,000 Square Feet anchor space. In 2017, it's rival Macy's closed and Herberger's decided to move into the 100,000 Square Feet former Macy's building. It opened in November of 2017 as possibly the last Bon-Ton to ever open. However, the renovation was done very cheaply and the most they changed was painting the entire store white. It was a terrible renovation as it even felt like Dayton's, the original department store in the space. The Carson's in Evergreen Park which opened earlier in the year wasn't cheaply and looked cool in some ways when nothing changed here. It's quite sad they didn't do much but it didn't mather as Bon-Ton and there several chains including Herberger's are going out of buisness. These pictures were token on Saturday August 11 and the store closed peremently Sunday August 26 due to signs saying last 15 days. Let's take a look at this store.

Thanks to reading the Midwest Retail blog! We got some more on the way including some from outside the main Midwest area! So stay tune!

  1. While I can see how it would be disappointing that Herberger's didn't do much to renovate this space, in my experience it seems that most department store chains that take over a former location of a competitor don't do much to make the place their own. I think it's just cheaper that way, at least at first (not to mention minimal renovations allow the store to open sooner). If the store does good business, a more thorough remodel could always come later. Unfortunately, in Herberger's case, that wasn't meant to be :(

    1. That's properly what they were hoping full. I found out that even Macy's did a terrible job even doing much to the space, even the Dayton's lablescar was still shown however Herberger's paint job at least converted that up. This is the malls 2nd biggest anchor via square footage so hopefully they'll fill it in some way.
